A New Supplement and Some Great Recipes Are Helping Me to Stay Healthy

I have struggled with somewhat odd eating habits for many years. I grew up loving to eat meat, but as I grew older, found it to no longer be very interesting. This especially happed with beef, which I came to dislike over time. But not eating any meat at all affected my health. Friends told me I should look into certain types of food as well as a supplemnt like CoQ 10 to make sure that I get what my body needs without having to force myself to eat meat.

First, I upped my intake of beans and tofu. I love both, but really did not know how to get creative with them before. Continue reading “A New Supplement and Some Great Recipes Are Helping Me to Stay Healthy”

My Shoulder is All Healed

I started going to a San Jose chiropractor nearly six months ago after I fell down a flight of steps. One may think that I suffered extensive injuries, but the only thing that really bothered me was my shoulder. When I first fell, I banged my shoulder against the concrete step pretty hard, and it felt like I had knocked it out of place. Fortunately, I didn’t, but that did not mean that it didn’t hurt like the dickens. My neighbor is the one who told me I should go to her chiropractor, and I was only too happy to take her advice.

The first thing the chiropractor did after doing a physical examination was order some X-rays. He wanted to see just how much damage I actually did to my shoulder. He was satisfied after looking at the imaging results that he would be able to help me with some basic adjustments. He explained that there are two different types of adjustments. The first is manipulation, which uses force. The second is mobilization, which is a softer but still accurate form of manipulation. Continue reading “My Shoulder is All Healed”

A Pregnancy Souvenir: Cells That Are Not Your Own

15ZIMMER-master675-v2

Recently, a team of pathologists at Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands carried out an experiment that might seem doomed to failure.

They collected tissue from 26 women who had died during or just after pregnancy. All of them had been carrying sons. The pathologists then stained the samples to check for Y chromosomes.

Essentially, the scientists were looking for male cells in female bodies. And their search was stunningly successful.

As reported last month in the journal Molecular Human Reproduction, the researchers found cells with Y-chromosomes in every tissue sample they examined. These male cells were certainly uncommon — at their most abundant, they only made up about 1 in every 1,000 cells. But male cells were present in every organ that the scientists studied: brains, hearts, kidneys and others.

In the 1990s, scientists found the first clues that cells from both sons and daughters can escape from the uterus and spread through a mother’s body.

4 Pentagon Labs Face Inquiry on Handling of Deadly Germs

12germs-superJumbo

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating four Defense Department labs for mishandling deadly germs used in bioterrorism research, a spokesman said Friday.

The mistakes involve anthrax, plague and viruses that cause encephalitis, which are studied by the military to defend against their potential use as biological weapons. There is no evidence that anyone has been harmed by the errors or that there is any risk to the public, officials say. But bioterrorism experts say that there should be zero tolerance because the organisms are so dangerous, and that even seemingly small mistakes, like flaws in record-keeping, could have calamitous results.

Because of the C.D.C. findings, the secretary of the Army on Sept. 2 ordered the four labs to suspend their work with certain dangerous microbes classified as “select agents” because of the risks that they pose. The suspension was first reported by USA Today. The laboratories are the Dugway Proving Ground Life Sciences Test Facility in Utah, and three sites in

Lower Blood Pressure Guidelines Could Be ‘Lifesaving,’ Federal Study Says

laboratory1

Declaring they had “potentially lifesaving information,” federal health officials said on Friday that they were ending a major study more than a year early because it has already conclusively answered a question cardiologists have puzzled over for decades: How low should blood pressure go?

The answer: way lower than the current guidelines.

For years doctors have been uncertain what the optimal goal should be for patients with high blood pressure. The aim of course is to bring it down, but how far and how aggressively remained a mystery. There are trade-offs — risks and side effects from drugs — and there were lingering questions about whether older patients needed somewhat higher blood pressure to push blood to the brain.

There Are Great Benefits to Walking Daily

I can remember having to go up the stairs to the bathroom one step at a time using my left leg for climbing. Then I started walking every day. At first it was just a couple of blocks. Then it was a mile. Then it was two miles. Soon after it was about three miles. The only thing holding me back from more is time. We are now enjoying the benefits of walking daily. My wife and I are both stronger. I am not having trouble with the stairs like I used to. I can go into the basement, climb the steps quickly and then go to the top floor without feeling like I am about to collapse. I do not feel tired after our walks anymore either. I cannot believe how far we have come in such a short period of time.

The benefits of walking daily are helping us both to lose weight and be motivated to eat even better. Continue reading “There Are Great Benefits to Walking Daily”

Maximize Your Workout

Whether you’re headed to a first rate gym or generally workout at home, several key factors will help maximize your workouts. If you’re new to working out, the first task is to set goals. Are you trying to lose weight, increase cardiovascular ability, strengthen muscles or seeking overall improved health? Define your goals and they’ll be easier to reach. Break them down into smaller attainable goals that span over three months. Consider losing 20 pounds in 3 months. This would then be broken down into weekly goals. The same formula should be used for distance, speed and weight.

The first portion of each work out should be spent doing a cardiovascular exercise. This could be walking, using the elliptical or rowing machine. Increased heart rate and warm muscles will serve to make strength training more effective. Plan on a warm-up time of at least twenty minutes.

Strength training should begin slowly and methodically. Whether you’re using machines or free weights, it’s highly recommended to spend at least thirty minutes with a trainer in order to develop proper technique. Without this instruction, not only will strength training be less effective, but the likelihood of injury increases.

Dieting: You Shouldn’t Go Cold Turkey

Making the decision to get healthier through cleaning up your diet is a wonderful personal decision. You can and should improve your diet whenever you are able to. There are some simple ways to improve your health through improving your diet.

You do not have to be a gourmet chef. Eating healthier does not mean you need to spend 5 hours in the kitchen every day. Yes, eating whole foods does take a little more time to prepare, but you don’t need to have culinary school experience and hours a day to dedicate to the venture. Simply invest in some real vegetables, real fruit, real whole grains, protein and fat-rich foods like nuts and meats that are not heavily processed, and you will be well on your way to improving your diet. If you can, avoid anything that comes out of a plastic bag or cardboard box. If it has been processed to the extent that it has been sitting in a plastic bag or cardboard box for weeks before you ever see it appear on the grocery store shelf, you know it has some added ingredients that are not going to be health-giving for you.

Sitting for long periods not bad for health, suggest researchers

New research from the University of Exeter and University College London has challenged claims that sitting for long periods increases the risk of an early death even if you are otherwise physically active.

The study, which is published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, followed more than 5000 participants for 16 years (making it one of the longest follow-up studies in this area of research) and found that sitting, either at home or at work, is not associated with an increased risk of dying.

These findings challenge previous research suggesting that the act of sitting itself causes harm even when people routinely walk a lot or do other exercise. Importantly, the findings contradict NHS recommendations which state that remaining seated for too long is bad for your health, regardless of how much exercise you do.

Dr Melvyn Hillsdon from Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Exeter said: “Policy makers should be cautious in recommending a reduction in the time spent sitting without also promoting increased physical activity.”

“Our study overturns current thinking on the health risks of sitting and indicates that the problem lies in the absence of movement rather than the time spent sitting itself. Any stationary posture

The Triad of Health

What is health?

Dorland’s Medical Dictionary defines health as a “state of optimal physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity.”

Our bodies are wired for health and vitality, not for illness and disease. Health is how our bodies function, not how they feel. Health comes from the inside out. And, importantly, the choices we make play a part in our health and well-being.

There are three components that make up the Triad of Health. They are Structural, Chemical and Emotional. Combined, they present an overall state of a person’s health.

Structure is the foundation of the human body and the Triad. It includes the bones, muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, cartilage and nerves. Shifts in structural alignment result from accidents, physical inactivity, or incorrect patterns of movement that have developed over time. Misalignments, also called subluxations, of the spine put pressure on the nerves that lead from the spinal column to the organs, glands, muscles, and other bones in our body, creating dysfunction.

The Chemical make-up and balance of the body includes diet and vitamins and mineral intake, as well as the function of organs and organ systems. The chemical aspect is disrupted by the ingestion of nicotine, alcohol,

Innovative health program reduces depression, unhealthy weights in teens

An innovative high school health program helped students maintain healthier weights and even alleviated severe depression for a full year after the program ended.

Researchers found that 12 months after completing the COPE Healthy Lifestyles TEEN Program, students had markedly lower body mass index than students who received a more standard health curriculum. Additionally, COPE teens who began the program with extremely elevated depression had symptoms in the normal range after 12 months.

COPE (Creating Opportunities for Personal Empowerment) Healthy Lifestyles TEEN (Thinking, Emotions, Exercise, Nutrition) teaches adolescents that how they think is directly related to how they feel and behave. It also teaches them how to turn negative beliefs triggered by “activating events” into positive beliefs so that they feel emotionally better and engage in healthy behaviors. The program is based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), with an emphasis on skills-building.

“CBT is the gold standard treatment for depression and anxiety, but it has traditionally been used in one-on-one, hour-long therapy sessions,” said Bernadette Melnyk, dean of The Ohio State University College of Nursing and lead author of the study.

“With COPE, any health professional or educator can teach cognitive behavior skills to adolescents. This is huge for schools or

Know more about Holistic Health Treatments

Holistic health and its treatments are not new. It is an age old concept but came into limelight these days. It is now become talk of the town and alluring many people towards the new concept of health care. The delay is because of headstrongness in the medical field and it is often slow to accept new ways of treatment.

Holistic health treatments are more an approach to how individuals should be treated rather than a treatment concept in and of itself. Those who practice holistic treatment believe that maintaining good health is more than simply taking care of the various parts of the body and it includes emotional and spiritual aspects as well. The primary objective of holistic health treatments is to achieve complete health, not simply a lack of disease or physical pain.

Holistic Health Treatments are not only based on treating physical symptoms but underlying psychological and emotional issues responsible for illness as well. In order to achieve total health, one should take into consideration, physical, spiritual and emotional factors to devise an effective treatment plan.

The tendency of a person to overcome health issues depends also on his willpower and to revoke his willpower a

Health Savings Accounts

Most people with health insurance, especially employer paid health insurance, really don’t know what their health care costs are. Furthermore, in many cases, they are limited in which health providers (doctors, hospitals, pharmacies etc) they can use.

Most people are locked into a network of doctors. They know what the co-pay is, but have no idea what the doctor actually charges.

When insured consumers are hospitalized, they rarely see the bill. They don’t know if the insurance company was overcharged or not. There are firms that audit hospital bills for insurers and self insured companies. They get paid a percentage of what they save on the bill payer by finding overcharges, duplicate charges and the like. The last I heard these firms were still making lots of money.

Overcharging, whether deliberate or not, by doctors and hospitals drive up health care costs for all. (So do malpractice suits, but that’s another story.)

In order to give consumers more direct control not only over their health costs, but in the choice of which doctor they can see or which hospital they can enter, Congress enacted the Health Savings Account Availability Act. As of the beginning of 2004, individuals who are not otherwise insured can

These Simple Exercises Could Help Preserve Brain Health

Want a cheap and easy way to improve your brain health? Try lifting weights a couple times a week.

A new study adds to evidence that light strength training — also called resistance training — may be key to maintaining a healthy brain. Because of the way strength training pumps blood to the brain, some researchers now think it goes beyond the benefits of aerobic exercise and helps preserve brain health as we age.

Teresa Liu-Ambrose and her colleagues at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver wanted to see whether resistance training could not only slow the progression of white matter lesions — a type of brain damage that is common in older adults and increases the risk of memory loss, dementia and stroke—but also help prevent falls, affect thinking skills and improve walking speed.

The researchers randomly divided 54 women between ages 65 and 75 who showed signs of the brain lesions into three groups. One group did light upper- and lower-body exercises for an hour twice a week with trainers at a university gym. Another group did the same training once a week, and a third group, which acted as the

National school based mental health intervention improves outcomes for at risk students

A national school-based mental health program that is now reaching almost one quarter of all elementary school students in Chile appears to have produced significant improvements in both behavioral and academic outcomes, such as attention problems and school attendance, among participating students. The results of a study by a team of Chilean and U.S. investigators appear in the October issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.

J. Michael Murphy, EdD, of the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Department of Psychiatry, senior author of the JAACAP paper, notes that this is the first study to document the positive impact of a large-scale pediatric mental health intervention using validated mental health measures and real-world benchmarks like end-of-the-year promotion and school attendance. “These findings suggest that school-based mental health programs could play an important role in achieving better educational outcomes for whole countries as well as individual children. Our findings also provide evidence that non-pharmacological interventions can be effective. ”

This is Something That Really Works for Me

I had a heart attack last year, and life has really changed for me as a result. Well, the first tip off that I was having heart problems was when I found myself unable to do certain private things with my wife in the confines of our bedroom. I learned too late that it can be a symptom that should not be ignored, and many doctors find that it happens as a result of heart disease. Friends at the club we belong to told me what product I should use. So, I wanted to know what is Sildenafil and find out if it could work for me.

I made sure to do some very thorough research, as my years of just doing things blindly without learning are now over. I want to lead a better life and I want to be here for my kids. Continue reading “This is Something That Really Works for Me”

Shed That Sweet Tooth

While sweet treats can be hard to resist, the World Health Organization (WHO) has set new dietary guidelines for people around the world. The guidelines, released on Wednesday, advise that both adults and children cut back on their sugar intake to stay healthy.

In a statement, Francesco Branca, director of the WHO’s nutrition department, said there is “solid evidence” that reducing daily sugar intake “reduces the risk of overweight, obesity, and tooth decay.”

Keep it Fresh

The guidelines do not apply to the sugars in fresh fruits and vegetables or those that are naturally present in milk. According to the WHO, there is no reported evidence of negative effects of consuming those sugars. Instead, the new guidelines focus on “added” or “free” sugars. These include sugars that are added to processed foods and drinks such as donuts, cookies, candy, and soft drinks.

Added sugars are sometimes described as “hidden” sugars because they exist in foods we might not think of as sweets, such as honey and ketchup. Health experts advise that consumers look at ingredients
